History

The Kishwaukee Valley Art League was conceived by Virginia Lary at the Town and Country Art Show, in February, 1972. The sign-up sheet showed that interest in a local art league was overwhelming. With the kind assistance of the DeKalb County Cooperative Extension Office, people were notified of the organizational meeting held in March where, Virginia became the first President of KVAL. Membership soon numbered eighty.

The Kishwaukee Valley Art League was formed to support the arts in the Kishwaukee Valley area. In addition to providing art and craft demonstrations, lectures, workshops, and seminars for everyone interested, the league tries to reach out to the larger community with its philanthropies.

During the League's existence, they have donated art scholarships to Kishwaukee College for their oustanding art students. A watercolor by Win Jones of the NIU Art Department was donated to their permanent art collection. In subsequent years, money was given to the Egyptian Theatre for glass display cases and an easel. A piece of artwork was donated to a family receiving a home form Habitat for Humanity, chosen from one of the leagues exhibits. Other monetary donations in the area inslude but are not limited to DeKalb County Schools for art awareness, 4-H Art and Craft Contest winners and the DeKalb Library.

The League's members participate in a rotating exhibit with local businesses. The League sponsors the Northern Illinois Art Show in Sycamore, Illinois. Many of the league members exhibit at the DeKalb Clinic, Sycamore Library, Sycamore Park District, Borders, and the DeKalb Library in group exhibits, as well as individual shows. Some members have one person shows throughout the year at various galleries and art fairs in the Midwest.

The KVAL monthly newsletter lists area exhibits, art shows, art fairs, and other activities, giving each member an opportunity for active participation.

Many of our members have a variety of interests, such as: oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, pen and ink, pencil, pottery, jewelry, photography, stained glass, cloth painting, weaving, wood, block printing, and silk screen printing. We hope, as a league, we can get to know each other and improve our individual interests.
